A stricter law was passed by the House panel that will affect online casino gambling.
The House panel passed legislation to crackdown on the $12 billion online gambling industries by applying stricter federal prohibitions to online casino games such as roulette, blackjack and online poker.
The bill by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., updated the Federal Wire Wager Act of 1961 that will now apply to online casino gambling. The law would prohibit the electronic transfer of funds that will be used as payment for bets and because of the law; the law enforcement will now have a stricter hand to block money transfer used by players as bets.
In the United States, internet casino gambling is mostly illegal and many of the two thousand three hundred gambling sites found online are located overseas.
According to Goodlatte, the bill passed by the judiciary committee, would definitely “prevent offshore fly by night gambling online business from violating the laws of all states.” He added that spending on the online gambling sites by online gamblers had skyrocketed that’s why the legislation is badly needed.
But US online bettors had contributed the largest spending amount and half of the betting in the $12 billion industry came from US gamblers. And because of the profit, many companies now want to take part in the action. The industry’s largest lobby, American Gaming Association, has opposed the gambling on the net but surprisingly support a feasibility study of legalizing the online gambling.
The House members of Nevada also introduced a bill, calling for a study about online gambling.
A heated argument about the bill had took place in the Judiciary committee. Goodlatte had an earlier attempt to get this anti-online gambling to pass through the congress but his attempt was not successful and was blocked and opposed by a lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
During the committee hearing, Goodlatte had shouted “this was the poison pill that Jack Abramoff had supported 5 years ago — don’t support it today.” He uttered thesee words as D-Fla representative, Rep. Robert Wexler, had sought a move to had an amendment in relation to horse racing.
Wexler did not make any remarks about on Abramoff reference and his move to have an amendment had also failed.
Representative from Utah, Rep. Chris Cannon remarked that “unfortunately, the gentleman just mentioned by the gentleman from Virginia had some involvement with the issue previously.” Abramoff was indicted and pleaded guilty in the corruption probe of the Justice Department.
The bill of Goodlatte was passed in a house reading with 25-11 votes.
